| Historical Note | "The University of Saskatchewan developed as a university state supported but not state controlled. For almost thirty years it was dominated by one man, Walter Charles Murray, the first president. Murray created a traditional university which not only taught the classics, literature, languages, philosophy, and history, but also emphasized the development of professional colleges and the teach of the sciences as a means of raising the level of education in the province and of providing solutions to the many problems it faced. Under Murray the university virtually became the sole source of post-secondary education in Saskatchewan; open to all who met the requirements. Through its associate course in agriculture it also served as a technical college; through its Department of Extension is served as a community college." [Hayden, p. xvi]. |
