Description (Scope and content)	Original diary and various papers of R. Lyndhurst Wadmore, Lieutenant of the Royal Canadian Regiment during the Northwest Resistance, covering from 8 April to 20 July 1885. Included in diary pocket is a requisition for short boots that was signed by Wadmore on May 1885, lyrics of the Infantry School Corps fight song, and a Victoria Daily Times article from 23 June 1944 about the remaining members of the Northwest Field Force and their experiences. David Ross, Military Curator of Parks Canada, writes that "this diary...was donated to Fort Battleford National Historic Park, Parks Canada in 1973 by Lieutenant Wadmore's grandson Dennis E. Harris of Victoria, B.C. along with his N. W. Canada Medal. It is one of the many items of historical interest acquired by the Fort during the long and distinguished tenure of Mrs. Mabel Simpson as Superintendant of the Park. The diary itself is written in a small pocket note book, 4" x 6" with a metal clasp, black cloth covers and marbelized end papers. It is handwritten, mainly in blue or lead pencil, but some entries are in ink. Prior to the start of the diary entries on April 8, 1885 the notebook had been used for some notes on military exercises presumably at the School of Infantry (I.S.C.) in Toronto. Included in the diary are a number of sketches in pencil or ink, these are reproduced at the end of the diary entries." Historical Note	Colonel Robinson Lyndhurst Wadmore was born in Upper Clapton, England, on January 6, 1855. Following in his father’s footsteps, he had taken up the Freedom and Livery of the Skinner’s Company in London, and studied architecture. He had been a Captain in the 2nd London Rifles (Volunteer Service), before emigrating to Canada in 1881. Upon his arrival he became a civil engineer in Winnipeg until 1883 when he joined the army. He accepted a Commission in the Royal Canadian Regiment as Lieutenant in 1883, and served in the Northwest Resistance campaign of 1885. He was at the relief of Battleford on April 24 and the action at Cut Knife Hill on May 2, as well as in operations against Chief Big Bear’s band in June. It was while at Little Khyber Pass, near Battleford, that he painted two watercolours which are now part of the Peter Winkworth Collection at Archives Canada. For his service in the campaign he was awarded the North West Canada medal and clasp (Saskatchewan). Lt. Wadmore was promoted to Captain in 1888, Adjutant in 1895, and Lieutenant Colonel in 1899. In 1905, he was gazetted as Commanding the Royal Canadian Regiment and later as District Officer Commanding the Province of British Columbia in 1910, retiring in 1912. After his retirement from active duty he became the Chief Censor for Vancouver Island and died at his home in Victoria on April 2, 1915. He was buried at Ross Bay Cemetery with full military honours.
Other notes	On page 49, in the May 14th entry, there is a reference to "Nichies." Nichies was a derogatory word used to describe First Nations and Metis people.
