Canada
. The
book
was
praised
for its
sensitivity
in
telling
the
stories
of
Indians
during
this
turbulent
time
.
It
won
a
1997
Saskatchewan
Book
Award
for
First
Peoples
Publishing
and was a
finalist
for the
Governor
General's
Literary
Award
for
non-fiction
.
David
Laird
(1833-1914)
was the
first
resident
Lieutenant
Governor
of the
North
West
Territories
of
Canada
. He was the
fifth
Lieutenant
Governor
in
charge
of the
territory
. He was
appointed
Indian
Commissioner
of the
North
West
Territories
,
Manitoba
, and
Keewatin
he
held
that
position
until
his
death
.
After
1909
he also
became
an
advisor
for the
Department
of
Indian
Affairs
.
