Historical Note	John Evans (1867-1958) was a reformer best known for his political activities on behalf of western Canadian farmers. He was born in Rhayader, Radnorshire, Wales on 25 June 1867 to John and Mary (Wylde) Evans. He emigrated to Canada in 1890, working for his first two years at the Polson Iron Works at Owen Sound, Ontario, then taking up a farm in the Saskatoon area. Evans held executive positions in a number of farmers' organizations: President of the Saskatchewan Farmers' Mutual Fire Insurance Co., Director of the Saskatchewan Co-operative Elevator Co., Executive Director of the Saskatchewan Grain Growers' Association, and President of the United Farmers of Canada (Saskatchewan Section). He also entered politics. He was first elected to the House of Commons in 1921 as a Progressive MP for the Saskatoon riding. Evans was re-elected in 1925 to represent Rosetown. Upon the breakup of the Progressive Party in the late 1920s, he joined the CCF. He was never reelected, despite his commitment to fighting for the poor and oppressed.
